Cleaning Rugs at Home: 
One of the most common stains on oriental rugs is red wine stain. Accidents do happen, so keep a large bottle of plain soda water readily available. If a glass of red wine or white wine spills on your rug, pour soda water on it immediately. This will dilute the wine and the bubbles will help to lift the stain out as you blot it lightly with an absorbent dry cloth or paper towel. Soda water works well with most stains and most fabrics too, if you are able to use it quickly enough. Stains that have been allowed to dry are much more difficult to deal with, and must be treated by a rug cleaning professional. Once you have treated the stained area; you must call your local rug cleaners and have them pick up your rug and wash it in their plant. Calling a wall to wall carpet cleaning company is the last thing you want to do. On site cleaners only clean the surface of the rug, because they CAN NOT completely wet the rug and wash with rug cleaning solution, because their equipment is not designed to remove as much water from the rug.
